Poor Man's Copyright and the Copyright House registration service

What is Poor Man's Copyright?

Poor man's copyright is a cheap, but in our opinion less effective way of protecting your work. The way it goes is, you send the artistic work to yourself and instead of opening the envelope, you leave it closed. The postal stamp would then serve as a proof that you're the owner of the work. However, poor man's copyright could easily be forged. One could send the envelope without proper sealing it and at any time in the future enclose any work one would like. Or, one could try to change the date stamp on the envelope. For this reason is poor man's copyright not a very desirable way to protect your work against infringement. It is very unlikely that it would prove your copyright ownership in case you need it.

We would say it's better to go for the independent, third-party copyright registration service of Copyright House, which anyone can easily afford.
